Abstract

A Collection of Reviews
Since 1997 teams of researchers, led by Stephen Farrall, have been following the lives of 199 offenders who were subject to probation supervision. The previous results have been published in books entitled Rethinking What Works with Offenders (2002) and Understanding Desistance from Crime (2006). This third text brings the project up to date and comes at a time of significant change for probation, when the now fragmented service’s ideals and existence have been challenged to their utmost. At this time of turmoil, Criminal Careers in Transition provides practitioners and policy makers with the research base on which to secure the future of helping work with offenders. Accordingly, we have commissioned three reviews of this seminal text, from a practitioner and two academics, and we present these perspectives below.
