Effective practice for working with young adults
Clinks have collaborated with Transitions to Adulthood to published guidance for probation staff to give practitioners, whether in the National Probation Service or Community Rehabilitation Companies, the tools to deliver a more effective approach to young adults. Effective Practice for Working with Young Adults: A Guide for Probation Services provides practical suggestions for effective ways to engage young adults and support their desistance from crime. It includes suggestions for managers on what they can do to enable staff to do this work. The authors have consulted with probation practitioners and service users to learn from them the most effective approaches to working with this age group. The guide includes: practical suggestions to assist probation practitioners in their day-to-day work with this age group; information on the specific issues facing young adults and how they impact on their engagement with probation, including maturity, trauma, health needs and the development of life skills; guidance on how to tailor services to specific groups of young adults with particular needs such as women, Black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) young people, those with disabilities and care leavers; measures that managers and commissioners can take to enable effective engagement of young adults and adapt services where necessary; and effective practice examples of different probation services approaches for engaging young adults. Vocational training courses for young people
Nacro has published an education brochure to enable access to vocational courses for young people. Be Who You Want is a brochure that identifies courses to help young people acquire the skills they need to get into education, training or employment and assist them to become work-ready. The report is aimed at young people age between 14 and 24 and details Nacro Centres across England where different vocational course are available. The brochure provides easily accessible information about the qualifications, learning opportunities from each course, the assessment process and potential next steps and opportunities. The courses available vary and include motor vehicle mechanics, animal care health and social care, business administration, building and construction and GCSE Maths and English and other related courses.
