This series of books arises from a study process that marked the centenary of the International Missionary Council (IMC), founded in 1921 at Lake Mohonk, USA. It has its origin in the Commission on World Mission and Evangelism of the World Council of Churches, which wanted to celebrate the work of its historical predecessor IMC (1921–1961).
The case studies in this book show that rather than collapsing under the strain of massive challenges, many North American Christians are reaching across divisions and differences to connect with people and contexts unlike themselves. The research in this book highlights multiple ways in which North American Christians are collaborating with others to witness to their faith. Such collaborations are like the mustard seeds of the Kingdom (Mt. 13:31–32), often small and yet creative actions of believers who push beyond Christian divisions and paralyzing social problems.

The current trend of politics and faith in India has left churches in the region grappling with issues of religious freedom, communal harmony and socio-political domination. The studies in this book show both the resilience of Indian Christians and the need for a critical rethinking of mission theology and practice in the region. Drawing on the rich tradition of rethinking Christianity in India, the studies are fresh attempts to engage in a metanoia, a transformative reflection on who we are and our task in Christian mission.

In a region where the cradle of Christianity stood and where the church has had an uninterrupted presence, Christian mission is taking on new forms. These shifts are prompted by vast socio-economic, demographic, geopolitical, and ecological changes. This volume shows how Middle Eastern Christians are jointly exploring new paths in mission and how they are relating to other faiths, especially Islam. It paints an image of resilient and creative Christian communities with a costly commitment to mission.

Atonement Theology in Conversation with Islamic Thought is a work of comparative theology which brings Christian atonement doctrine into conversation with Islamic critique of that doctrine and Christian soteriology generally. After an Islamic response to ‘atonement’ has been distilled from a substantial collection of modern Muslim scholars, the thrust of these criticisms is then brought to bear upon three theological frameworks of redemption represented by three distinctive theologians. The first two, Anselm and Barth, taken as a pair, represent developments in an atonement of vicarious suffering – the lightning rod concept that attracts so much Muslim disapproval. The third, Kathryn Tanner, exemplifies a strong contrast, a modern iteration of incarnational or participatory atonement.
Goaded by the thought of the Islamic conversation partners, the study aims to catalyze and refine Christian theologizing of divine-human reconciliation. The intended results are a modest advance in a Christian apprehension of Islamic thought; an improved posture from which to communicate the Gospel within an Islamic context; and, primarily, a careful and fortified Christian construal of atonement as such.

To understand God’s concerns in our cities, this book examines four social anthropological themes: urban people, urban groups, urban time and space, and urban flows. All four of these themes are both causes and effects of changes in social networks. Changes in social networks have brought about tremendous changes in urban society and in the lives of urban people and their communities. The social network approach helps believers discover what God expects of the urban church and how urban Christians should live to fulfill that expectation, recognising the new opportunities that the God of Missio Dei has already provided around us for urban ministry. In addition, this work provides a theoretical foundation for reading the threats and challenges that changes in social networks pose to the urban church.

This book is about the hope of the Church in the secular age uninterested in Christianity. In this setting, the theology and practice of missional church is a critical topic. We introduce urban churches in South Korea conducting maeul ministry, Korea’s context-specific practice of the missional church in local communities. The cases are followed by theological reflections to connect the practice with the theology of missional church. These stories of maeul ministry present various examples of church involvement and leadership in social issues of the environment, healthcare, education, and community-building, offering new hope and challenge for the world church. We hope this book will provide new insight and wisdom to church communities and pastors who pursue and practice the missional essence of the church in these changing times.
