Issue: 38:1—Family Engagement
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. Department of Education recently released a joint policy statement on family engagement (May 2016). The policy statement purports that all early childhood systems should recognize and support family engagement in children’s learn-ing, development, and wellness. Research supports strong family engagement in the early years has a positive impact on children’s development, academic success, and long-term health and wellness. This issue will focus on broad issues related to family engagement in early intervention, public school and community early childhood programs, and com-munity agencies. Topics that manuscripts might address include effective family-centered and capacity building prac-tices, family coaching within early intervention systems, fam-ily and professional collaboration, supporting family well-being as it relates to supporting their child’s develop-ment, and approaches to engaging families with young chil-dren who experience poverty. We welcome submission of manuscripts that include descriptions of empirical research, reviews and syntheses of the literature, and discussions of pertinent policies, programs, and conceptual perspectives. Due Date: July 31, 2017
