Abstract
The anti-inflammatory activity of mefenamic acid was tested on rats with adjuvant induced experimental arthritis. Arthritis was induced by a single intradermal injection of complete Freund's adjuvant (0·625 mg dry weight of mycobacteria) in thirty rats weighing between 130 g and 165 g. The rats were then divided into three groups of ten:
An untreated control group, Animals treated with mefenamic acid (50 mg/kg) starting on the fifth day after innoculation of the adjuvant, Animals in which treatment was commenced after the onset of arthritis.
Results were assessed by clinical criteria (articular score and severity of arthritis). Statistical analysis of the results showed that mefenamic acid had some therapeutic effect in adjuvant arthritis although it did not prevent animals developing a moderate form of the disease.
