Abstract

A shared institutional connection to the London School of Economics and Political Science makes Millennium a fitting place to publish this essay drawn from the LSE’s Martin Wight Archives. The Editors feel that although this essay is unfinished, Wight’s thought on the disunity of humankind is revealing in an era of intensifying globalisation, and should be available to students of International Studies around the world. To complement this contribution, the Editors have solicited a Forum on ‘The Disunity of Mankind’ discussing the implications of this essay for Wight’s scholarship and intellectual project, inter-civilisational and inter-cultural politics, and International Political Theory more generally. The Editors thank Susannah and Gabriele Wight for their permission to publish, the Millennium Editorial Board members for their lively and insightful comments, the Martin Wight Memorial Trust, the LSE Library Archives, and the LSE International Relations Department. At the recommendation of the scholars participating in the Millennium 44.1 Forum on ‘The Disunity of Mankind’, the concluding quote from Urban II has been included to keep the essay in its original entirety.
