The personal choices that people make are critical in enabling their engagement in meaningful occupation. Although choice is important, it has to be recognised that not all service users make informed choices to assist their recovery. This opinion piece explores the role of occupational therapists in facilitating informed choice in the light of service user empowerment and the Mental Capacity Act 2005. The opinion offered is the need to recognise the continuing role of occupational therapists in challenging some of the choices that service users make in order to enable their engagement in meaningful occupation, despite the current changes in policy and legislation.
