Abstract

Having had an editorial to introduce the special first issue of 2021, it is not too late for new business. The new year began with some changes and a point of stability.
My intention when I became Managing Editor (ME) was to refresh the editorial team and advisory board over a few years, and that effort continues. I would first like to thank Jennifer Miller for her years of service as the editor for Progress Reports (PR). PRs are a distinctive part of PPG. They require a proactive editor with a sense of the breadth of the field, and I am happy that I recommended Jennifer to Nick Clifford seven years ago. Jennifer will join the editorial advisory board. PRs will remain a vibrant part of PPG, and Lynn Resler will take over from Jennifer. I am confident in her vision and ability for running the PRs. I look forward to working with her on the PPG team, as we have in our research over the past 20 years.
I would also like to thank outgoing members of the editorial advisory board and to welcome new advisors. David Foster, Glenn McGregor, and Doug Sherman have served well, and I am sure that Nick Clifford, who recruited them, joins me in extending appreciation for their service on behalf of the journal. Joining the editorial board are Carlo Donadio, Julia Hall, Saskia Keestra, and Jack Williams. I look forward to working with them as part of a team, with an eye on advice on special issues and the best uses of our unique sections.
Not changing in 2021 is the aim to keep papers within 7000 words, even though SAGE has expanded our printed page allocation by 20%. This is relevant at this point because the first paper of this issue is unusually long. I made this exception because I have been hoping to get a paper on Mars since becoming ME, and I can therefore make the excuse that this paper covers two planets. The increase in pages means that more main papers will be published and with less delay between online and printed publication. Given the number of papers submitted and the previous backlog, the expansion will allow us to better serve authors while maintaining our standards.
Best wishes for the remainder of 2021 to all,
George P Malanson
Managing Editor
