Abstract
Women and sexual and gender minorities (SGMs) have unique transportation experiences and needs, including public transit services. However, there is a gap in the data that documents their experiences and needs. This paper aims to add to existing research by examining the transit needs and experiences of women and SGMs, which include, but are not limited to, individuals who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, asexual, transgender, Two-Spirit, queer, intersex, or gender nonconforming. Employing a qualitative research approach, we conducted focus groups with individuals who use NJ TRANSIT services in New Jersey. Through an examination of topics related to accessibility, comfort, transit reliability, agency communications, personal safety, security, harassment, and discrimination, we aim to better understand the mobility needs, barriers, challenges, and concerns of women and SGMs when using transit. We compare the needs across the three groups (cisgender women, lesbian, gay, and bisexual individuals, and transgender/gender nonconforming individuals) to identify differences and similarities in experiences. Ultimately, this research aims to provide transit agency decision-makers with the information needed to implement service, operational, and staffing changes that improve travel experiences for this population of riders.
