Thermodynamics and mechanical analysis of adsorbed water in unidirectional fiber-reinforced composites by hybrid resins

Moisture diffusion and mechanical properties in continuous carbon fiber–reinforced thermoplastics were systematically studied in this research. A fixed amount (30 wt.%) of polyphenylence sulfide in polyethersulphone solution shows the most excellent water resistance and mechanical function. Thermodynamic analysis was carried out in order to monitor the change of adsorbed heat from different mass rate of polyphenylence sulfide at four environment temperature. The results indicate the increasing value of adsorbed heat improves water-resistant ability and interface bond force between the carbon fiber and matrix. Although the adsorbed water degraded the function of composites, mechanical test, including interlaminar shear strength test, flexural test, and compressive test, also proves the 30% mass rate of PPS performed the best comprehensive mechanical properties.
