Elastodynamic Tailoring of Motion Conversion Mechanisms by Using Fiber Reinforced Composites

Abstract

A new analytical model has been developed in order to investigate the po tential benefits of using fiber-reinforced composites in motion conversion mechanisms of internal combustion engines. The model consists of a quasi-static lamination analysis of hollow, circular, filament-wound connecting rods, combined with an elastodynamic analy sis of a complete mechanism whose connecting rod is the only flexible link. A comprehen sive parametric study has been focused on the material system, lay-up and cross-sectional dimensions of the connecting rod. The results indicate that the operation of motion con version mechanisms can be improved significantly by employing connecting rods made of properly tailored composites, as an alternative to the commonly used steel alloys.
