On 18-22 March 2013, in Turin, Italy, the Joint Spring School on the Analysis of Educational Inequalities took place, jointly organized by the ECSR, the Collegio Carlo Alberto and Milan-Turin, the Graduate School in Social and Political Studies of the University of Milan and the PhD Program in Sociology and Political studies of the University of Turin. On 18-19 April 2013, in Luxembourg, IMPALLA-ESPANET International Conference on Empirical Evidence from Social Policy Research, “Building Blocks for an Inclusive Society”, took place. The conference discussed questions such as: What are the essential building blocks for welfare states to construct an inclusive society? How to avoid marginalization: Activation versus means-tested? Which policies respond to the flexibility required on the labor market? How can welfare states obtain participation in society in social, political and economic spheres while respecting diversity? How to empower the disadvantaged? How could education and family capital underpin an inclusive society? Les 23 et 24 mai 2013, à Amiens, en France, le Colloque pluridisciplinaire « Construction et usages des indicateurs - Pauvreté, richesse, inégalités, bien-être, performance » a eu lieu à l’Université de Picardie Jules Verne. Les débats, assez anciens, autour des indicateurs sociaux ont été récemment relancés suite à la publication du rapport dit Stiglitz-Sen-Fitoussi sur la mesure du progrès social et de la performance économique. Ce rapport a notamment eu quelques répercussions sur la statistique publique française qui se veut désormais plus attentive à certaines formes d’inégalités et à la mesure du bien-être. Les communications ont été organisesé par rapport à quatre axes suivants : 1. Théories sociales et politiques, mise en indicateurs, débat public ; 2. Espaces de production statistique ; 3. Statistiques, action, argumentation ; 4. Invisibilité statistique et invisibilité sociale. On 2-4 June 2013, in Ames, Iowa, the Seventh International Total Survey Error Workshop (ITSEW) took place, organized with the support of Iowa State University. The ITSEW is an annual workshop to discuss emerging research on multiple survey errors. The theme of the 2013 workshop was “Total Survey Error: The Art of Balancing and the Science of Measuring". Topics included presentations of research that explore or analyze the trade-offs of two or more sources of survey error within the context of relatively recent methodological or statistical approaches. Le 12 juin 2013, à Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines près de Paris, la Journée d'étude « Usages de la lexicométrie en sociologie » a été organisée au Laboratoire Printemps de l’Université de Versailles-St-Quentin. Le thème général était l’interprétation sociologique, interprétation permise ou induite par la lexicométrie ou à des outils informatiques d'analyse de texte. Deux axes de réflexion portaient sur : 1. les pratiques de constitution et de préparation de corpus textuels ; 2. les pratiques d’interprétation qui permettent de passer des opérations et des résultats issus du traitement informatisé du langage à des hypothèses, voire à des conclusions, d’ordre sociologique. Du 19 au 21 juin 2013, à Fribourg, en Suisse, IVème congrès international du Réseau international francophone de la recherche qualitative, « La logique de la découverte en recherche qualitative », a eu lieu à l’Université de Fribourg. Le projet reposait sur le pari de mettre entre parenthèse la question de la validité des résultats, usuellement centrale dans toute réflexion épistémologico-méthodologique, pour centrer la discussion sur la découverte en train de se faire et s’intéresser au processus qui, en donnant à voir la production des résultats, permet de valider ces derniers. Les sept axes de travail ont été privilégiés pour structurer les ateliers : 1. Hasard, perspicacité et sérendipité ; 2. L’écriture comme opération de production de sens sur les données ; 3. Description, interprétation et découverte ; 4. Imagination, fiction, hypothèse zéro et découverte ; 5. Abduction et inférence ; 6. Interprétation et surinterprétation ; 7. On 25-28 June 2013, in Barcelona, the 15th Applied Stochastic Models and Data Analysis International Conference took place. The main objective was the presentation of papers, both theoretical and practical, on new techniques and methodologies with the objective of using the methods proposed for solving real life problems by analyzing the relevant data. On 26-28 June 2013, in Bern, Switzerland, the 2013 Swiss Sociological Association Congress, “Inequality and Integration in Times of Crisis”, took place. Since Karl Marx first described the enormous social inequalities and their potential for social change at the beginning of industrialization in the 19th century, the origins, extent, and consequences of social inequality, as well the level of inequality which a society is willing to tolerate, have been major themes in sociology. The economic crisis at the start of the 21st century underlines the fact that the theme of inequality has not lost its relevance. On 27-28 June 2013, in Cergy-Pontoise north of Paris, the Cergy-Pontoise University organized a workshop on “Complexity in Social Systems: From Data to Models". The meeting was co-organized by the Laboratoire de Physique Théorique et Modélisation (LPTM-CNRS-UCP) and the Centre d’Analyse et de Mathématique Sociales (CAMS-CNRS-EHESS), and was an event of HumanICT (http://humanict.csregistry.org/), a thematic network of the Réseau National des Systèmes Complexes (RNSC).
On 27-29 June 2013, in Greenwich, London, the Ninth UK Social Networks Conference took place. The keynote speakers were Pip Pattison, University of Melbourne, and Emmanuele Lazega, Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris (Sciences Po).
