Abstract

One year. Year one. I’m very happy to share with all the readers and contributors two important figures of this first year that just completed after the relaunch of HSMR. Building on the excellent work done by previous EiC, the journal is in very good health. Submissions increased 40% from 2015, authors represented 28 countries, and the quality of manuscripts was very satisficing. Let me thank the editorial board, all the associate editors, and the reviewers for the great work they did.
Still, much can be done to further consolidate HSMR. The aim is to become even more global and the home of all scholars engaged in influential healthcare management research. We’re not that far from this, but we look ahead to an even stronger positioning of the journal. For management in healthcare is more than ever central. Why?
Because we need to better manage outcomes. We need to better manage innovation. We need to better manage operations. We need to improve patient experience. We need to control volumes and appropriateness. We need to better manage turf wars among clinical specialties. We need to develop multidisciplinary work, and new skill mix. We need to learn how to make better use of big data for management purposes. We need to reconfigure the relationship among health systems-providers-industry. And much more … Look for further directions at the European Healthcare Management Association annual conference, this June in Milan. The title? “Health futures.” Opportunities for relevant, influential, ground-breaking research don’t lack. And HSMR is ready to be the home for this research.
