Evaluation of mechanical and wear properties of A713–Al 2 O 3 –CaCO 3 hybrid composite materials fabricated by stir casting

Aluminum hybrid composite materials are advanced materials that can fulfill the recent demands in advanced engineering applications due to their low weight and high strength. In the present work, Al₂O₃ and CaCO₃ particles are selected with different wt% of 5, 10, and 15, respectively, to fabricate the A713–Al₂O₃–CaCO₃ hybrid matrix composite (HMC) using the stir casting process. The fabricated composite samples were cross-rolled at 450°C. After rolling, the microstructures and mechanical properties were studied. The experimental results reveal that the porosity of the HMMCs was reduced by 95.3% with the application of the hot rolling process. The hardness and ultimate tensile strength of the HMC were increased by 2 times and 5 times with the addition of 15 wt% of Al₂O₃ and 5 wt% CaCO₃ than that of the A713 matrix material. The presence of CaCO₃ contributed to the formation of a tribo-layer, reducing friction and enhancing wear resistance. This research explores the advancement in hybrid composite materials with enhanced properties.
