Abstract

The British Journalism Review Digital Journalism Award for the outstanding digital team of the year in online news journalism for 2017, presented as part of the 2018 Online Media Awards organised by The Drum magazine, has been won by BBC World English. The team achieved a significant increase in its audience and repositioned it from older males to younger females, all within a year. It was, said the judges, brimming with good ideas.
The award, judged by an independent panel of BJR editorial board members, was presented at a dinner and ceremony held at the Marriott Hotel, Grosvenor Square, London. The panel also commended two other entries.
Bloomberg, a forceful contender in the outstanding team category, was described as being professional, authoritative and innovative, and the judges were impressed by its excellent graphics and informative copy. Previous winner Channel 4 News was also commended for always being a leading challenger in the online news business and for reaching almost 2billion users across all platforms.
This award is one of three BJR annual celebrations of quality journalism, joining the Cudlipp Award, for popular campaigns in any national UK newspaper, and the Charles Wheeler Award for outstanding contribution to broadcast journalism.
