The NATIS conference of 1974 set out a programme for unifying the documentation, libraries and archives services within a country into a national information system. Where such services are already established, the diffeculties of applying the programme are con siderable. With emphasis on libraries, the essay examines the present position in the UK in relation to the NATIS principles, and considers the implications in the areas of control, coordination, staffing and bibliographic control.
