A study of the university library committees in six British and six Canadian universities describes and compares the role and effectiveness of the committees in the pattern of university and library governance, their membership, their terms of reference, their operational practices, issues requiring decisions and their perceived influence in the university community. Generally speaking, while the committees in both countries operated in a very similar manner, the British committees played a more prominent role in decision making than their Canadian counterparts.
