Abstract

Highlights in Update 106
Welcome to update 106. Effective management skills are often taken for granted and over recent years the opportunities for practice managers and GPs to develop management skills have become grown to become a critical part of general practice. We have spent time updating Section 7 (Basic Management Techniques) to reflect the growing reliance on what is a critical capability in the practice. This chapter gives an introduction to management skills and what we hope is a range of useful techniques and suggestions. We hope you find it informative and helpful in the work place.
There has never been a moment since the inception of the NHS where General Practice has been envied internationally on delivering a world class health service. We have seen innovation thrive with pharmacists, physicians associates and paramedics adding to the broader primary care family. The digital age is blossoming with the offer of electronic consultations, electronic prescriptions and direct patient electronic communications. Practice management has moved from good practice to critical practice as the changes come at an ever faster pace.
Over the coming months we will be updating various sections to represent further changes on the horizon. As practitioners in general practice (we are practice managers and GPs) we appreciate the enormous amount of change and pressure on GP practices and we want our updates to be relative and informative. Please continue to let us know what you would find most helpful.
