Abstract

So often we hear people say they are not racist and this may be true, but as this book points out that is not enough in this day and age, it is too complacent. Kendi makes a very clear case for why we all need to be antiracist if we are ever to overcome the prejudices and discriminations in society. He examines racism through the lenses of power, ethnicity, culture, bodies and biology and at every turn asks us to do some soul searching but also gives us tools to make changes to the way we think and act. This is done by his honesty about his own racism [yes he is a black man] and how he moved through it to an antiracist stance. He debunks myths and taboos and addresses the complications that arise when race intersects with ethnicity, class, gender and sexuality.
The message of the book is that neutrality is not an option and I will say no more because you do need to read this book, not just a lengthy review about it!
