This Orientalist imaginary constructs a racial opposition: white Western women, who have achieved legitimacy as vocal political actors, versus ‘silent’ subaltern Pakistani ‘raped Muslim women’ (Abu-Lughod, 2002; on securitization theory, see Bertrand, 2018).
