Abstract

A large number of studies, publications and congresses have been devoted over the years to Luca Pacioli and his activities as a professor, scholar, author and promoter of mathematics. In 2009, a congress and associated activities were held to celebrate the Fifth Centenary of De Divina Proportione and in 2011, the II International Paciolian Meeting entitled Before and after Luca Pacioli, was conducted. In 2012, the first part of the studies on Leonardo, Pacioli and the Valtiberina (Upper Tiber Valley) were completed and published. In 2012, the friar of Sansepolcro returned to Milan and was taken in at the Napoleonic Auditorium of the Academia de Bellas Artes of Brera. The results of the research carried out were presented in a seminar and the proceedings were published (UB, 2014).
On 18 and 19 June 2015 the IV International Meeting “Luca Pacioli” took place and in the present year 2016 the X Meeting Esteban Hernández Esteve on Accounting History was held on 13 and 14 June in Las Palmas of Gran Canaria. In this meeting the memory and the expositions on the life and activities of the Franciscan monk born in the Borgo were widely considered. The celebrations of the Fifth Centenary of the death of the mathematician friar will be held on 14, 15, 16 and 17 June 2017 in Sansepolcro, Urbino, Perugia and Florence. The activites will be centred around Pacioli’s life and work, his teaching of accounting, and also his view of nature.
The International Congress PACIOLI 2017 will not only devote itself to the celebration of the survival and effectiveness of the teaching of the friar of Sansepolcro: it wants to stress the actual presence of the cultural model professed by the Franciscan professor of mathematics in the debate. This way of teaching is continued nowadays in the schools and universities, as well as in research and communication centers, primarily with regard to accounting and economic subjects, but also his philosophy of nature. In an age, marked by the triumph of informatics, the reflections of an author who knew how to react with incredible discernment to the invention of printing, demonstrates the need to integrate our attitude toward the informatics revolution and to begin to formulate answers about the magnitude of the problems that it gives rise to. This need has been highlighted in the case of “digital natives”, that is, of the generation who have grown up with the Internet. The Project therefore is not only aimed at scientific researchers and university graduates; but also at the pupils of advanced secondary schools, as well as all persons who are interested in the Renaissance of mathematics and the arts.
