A Consulting Model for Providing Integration Opportunities for Preschool Children with Disabilities

Abstract

Project STIP (Supported Transition to Integrated Preschools) implemented and evaluated a teacher consulting model to increase integration opportunities for preschool children with disabilities who were served in self-contained special education classrooms in a public school system. The model is appropriate for children with a variety of disabilities. Evaluation data on program curriculum change and consumer satisfaction are presented. These data show that parents and preschool regular educators evaluated the model positively and identified the opportunity to collaborate with special educators as essential for successful integration. In addition, these data demonstrate that integration opportunities increased during the 3 years of the project.
