Concept Design for Fluid Management by Patients Undergoing Hemodialysis Treatment: Means-Ends Reasoning and Persuasive Design

Abstract

This article demonstrates how Human Factors and Ergonomics (HFE) methods such as the Abstraction Hierarchy (AH) and means-ends reasoning links can be creatively coupled with persuasive design frameworks to create a product and accompanying mobile app. In the current case, the key idea was to support the patients undergoing dialysis and their caregivers. In addition, the constraints of the work domain were mapped by AH and used to create the product and mobile app. The idea in both innovations was to creatively extend the core strengths of HFE methods to provide value in product design interventions and interactions.
