Grants and Awards
The Calvin K. Kazanjian Economic Foundation provides grants that support
economic literacy
and address the following issues and audiences: (a) elevating the nation’s understanding of the need for economic education; (b) producing materials, conducting seminars and workshops that promote discussions and assist in the development of greater economic literacy; (c) applying new strategies for teaching economics and personal finance including on-line and web-based instruction; (d) creating projects, policy studies, or programs that encourage measurement of economic understanding more often and/or more effectively; (e) developing programs that help disenfranchised youth and/or young adults in how to participate in the economic system; and (g) offering free textbook and efficient distribution of financial and economic education leveraging technology. Eligible applicants are non-profit 501(c)(3) organizations in the United States. The Foundation looks favorably at programs that match grants of support with funding from other organizations, learned institutions, universities, colleges, and government sources. Grant awards are for from US$5,000 to US$25,000. Organizations wishing to be considered for funding need to complete the Letter of Interest online. The Google RISE Award is an annual grant program that aims to fund
computer science education
and merge, nonprofit computer science organizations around the world. The program aspires for students to be creators not just consumers of tomorrow's technology, including students from all backgrounds. The program emphasizes participation from girls, youth in low-income communities, and minorities who have historically been underrepresented in the field of computer science. Eligible applicants are organizations that currently operate extracurricular computer science programs. They must have clearly defined objectives, viable plans to achieve them, a track record of success that the program can be executed as described, and a plan for measuring the program’s impact. They must also have deep roots in the community, including partnerships or collaboration to continue engaging youth. Grants are from US$10,000 to US$25,000. Deadline is September 23. The American Mathematical Society Epsilon Fund was established to help support
summer mathematics programs
for mathematically talented high school students. The goal of the program is to aid and promote programs that support and nurture mathematically talented youth in the United States, and to make these opportunities available to the broad pool of all mathematically talented students. Programs need to have been in existence for at least one year, and preferably more. Successful programs tend to have the following characteristics: run over a period of multiple weeks I the summer, bring in at least 20 high school students with mathematical talent, and generally are directed by mathematicians. Programs can focus on problem solving or mathematical research in any area of mathematics. Eligible applicants are program directors of summer mathematics programs. Grant awards range from upper US$15,000 to lower $2,500. Funding is for one year with half of the funds used for student scholarships and half for program expenses. Grant deadline is December 15. Ocean Awareness Contest
The 2020 Ocean Awareness Contest is asking all young artists, conservationists, makers, thinkers, and activists who are concerned about the future of our blue planet to raise awareness about climate change. Thousands of youth around the world participate in this annual contest trying to come up with potential solutions for ocean conservation through art, creative media, and storytelling. Submissions are accepted in these forms: Visual Art, Film, Music, Poetry, Prose, and Interactive Multimedia and should be a response to 1 of 5 prompts listed on the contest web page. Students ages 11-18 are invited to participate. There is a junior division for ages 11-14 and a senior division for ages 15-18. Winners may receive prizes of up to a US$1,500 scholarship, depending on which division they enter and what prize they win. The deadline for this contest is June 14, 2021. Annual DNA Day Essay Contest
The American Society of Human Genetics (ASHG) supports National DNA Day through the Annual DNA Day Essay Contest. DNA Day celebrates the completion of the Human Genome Project in April 2003 and the discovery of the double helix of DNA in 1953. The purpose of this contest is to ask high school students to examine, question, and reflect on important concepts in genetics. Essays are expected to be well-reasoned arguments that indicate a deep understanding of scientific concepts related to the essay question posted on the contest web page. The first place winner receives US$1,000 and a US$1,000 genetics material grant, second place wins US$600 and a US$600 genetics material grant, and the third place winner receives US$400 and a US$400 genetics material grant. There will be 10 students who will receive an honorable mention and US$100 each. The deadline for this contest is March 3, 2021. Get to Know Contest
The goal of the ‘Wild Neighbours Society’ is to promote environmental education in hopes of raising a generation of youth who are aware of their impact on the environment and how their positive interaction with nature and wildlife can help preserve our world for generations to come. This contest is open to anyone 19 years of age or younger. Applicants are welcome to submit an original work of art, writing, photography, videography and/or music that is inspired by nature.
