Optimized smart base frame for enhanced vibration isolation using different cavity geometries and viscous damping

The safe transportation of fragile materials is a challenge, particularly on highways where vibrations induced by road conditions can cause substantial damages. This study investigates the influence of periodic cavity geometry on vibration attenuation in 3D aluminum base frames. Experimental and numerical analyses demonstrate that the introduction of periodic cavities significantly reduces vibration amplitudes, with horizontal rectangular cavities achieving a 28.96% reduction. When viscoelastic material (VEM) is incorporated within the cavities enabling adaptive vibration control, this integration enhances attenuation, achieving reductions of up to 93.41%, while also allowing the tuning of natural frequencies and vibration characteristics to suit specific use cases. Band gap analysis brings to light the capability of the smart structure in wave propagation suppression over certain frequency ranges through periodic cavity structure, thus underscoring the synergy between cavity geometry and material damping. This further illuminates the wave filtering mechanism and offers an excellent basis for the design of vibration isolation systems for transportation, aerospace, and structural engineering applications.
