Abstract
Social welfare and international and national economics were most emphasized in three Indian dailies, according to a content analysis of a 1985 sample of newspaper issues. Quoted sources were most often officials, and development news was more often urban that rural in focus. Personal interviews with 14 Indian journalists and mail responses from 38 more indicate that control of key resources by the government, traditional news values, such as an emphasis on speed, and somewhat inadequate journalism training prevents journalists from stressing development news coverage.
