Abstract

In the spring of 2022, the violence against women field lost a prominent researcher and activist, Diana Scully. Many knew Diana for her groundbreaking article, “Riding the Bull at Gilly's”: Convicted Rapists Describe the Rewards of Rape, which she co-authored with Joseph Marolla. Published in 1985 in Social Problems, the article remains one of the most widely read and cited pieces in sexual assault research. I remember the impact it had on me the first time I read it, and it has influenced my writing on sexual assault for nearly four decades. Contributors to this symposium also discuss that article and some of Diana's other publications, but they also talk about her impact as a teacher, a mentor, an advocate, an activist, and a friend. I am grateful to Sarah Jane Brubaker and Gay Cutchin for guest editing this tribute to Diana. It makes abundantly clear that she will be missed by many for many reasons.
