Juliann Woods, Florida State University (FSU), has been elected Vice President
Juliann Woods, PhD, is currently a professor at FSU in the School of Communication Science and Disorders where she teaches interdisciplinary coursework in early intervention and autism. She directs the Communication and Early Childhood Research and Practice Center and is also on the faculty of the FSU Autism Institute where she is involved in research and professional development projects focusing on family-guided routines-based and early social communication intervention for young children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. In her new role as DEC’s Vice President, she will focus on sharing the value of the organization with others and helping to attract more participation. She would also like to explore the use of technology and its various applications to expand DEC’s visibility and impact.
Susan Connor, Illinois Early Intervention Program, has been elected Treasurer
Susan Connor, MEd, has 15 years experience working on behalf of young children and their families in the Part C Early Intervention system. Currently, Susan is a Regional Training Coordinator with the Illinois Early Intervention Training Program. Susan’s goals as DEC Treasurer are to (a) work with the Board and DEC members to ensure sound financial decision making so that DEC, as an organization, can advance its mission to support families with young children with special needs; (b) help DEC continue to offer its membership opportunities to become knowledgeable leaders on the local, state, and national level; and (c) offer support to DEC’s membership in promoting positive outcomes for young children and families.
Misty Goosen, University of Kansas, has been elected Secretary
Misty obtained her Educational Specialist degree (EdS) in school psychology from the University of Kansas. On graduation, she coordinated Part C services at an early childhood special education preschool. Currently, Misty is the Project Coordinator for the Kansas Inservice Training System (KITS) at the University of Kansas. She has held this position for the past 18 years. Her goal as DEC Secretary will be to (a) work on the integration of the DEC Recommended Practices into current work and initiatives (e.g. RTI), (b) improve membership recruitment and retention (especially of young professionals), and (c) strengthen the ability of DEC to integrate research in a way that is meaningful and reproducible in the work that early childhood professionals carry out every day.
Michael Barla, Rockwood School District, has been elected Member-at-Large
Michael A. Barla, EdD, MEL, CCC-SLP, is the Director of Early Childhood Education for the Rockwood School District located in suburban St. Louis County, Missouri. As a newly elected member of the Board, Michael plans to focus on the following goals: (a) increasing the number of men actively involved in the provision of early childhood services and involvement in DEC, (b) continuing to expand the collaborative efforts between DEC and National Association for the Education of Young Children, (c) increasing active participation in DEC by those professionals working in the field, and (d) ensuring that DEC is an active participant in the development of any early childhood common core standards.
