In this year’s keynote presentation, Dr. Julie A. Washington, a professor at Georgia State University, will discuss how early childhood education can bridge the gap between school literacy expectations and the early literacy environments of children who come from impoverished backgrounds and whose community language differs from their school’s dominant language. Dr. Washington’s presentation will focus on the additional literacy needs of African American children growing up in poverty and the increasingly important role of early education for supporting the language and literacy development of these students.
