Workers' Compensation Claims in the Hospitality Industry: a Comparative Study

Abstract

Workers' compensation claims are becoming increasingly expensive for employers. Because of the high accident rate in the hospitality industry, it has been assumed that the industry also incurs a high rate of workers' compensation claims. However, no studies have yet analyzed these claims in detail. The results of this study indicated that the hospitality industry has an extraordinarily high rate of costly workers' compensation claims. The types and nature of the most commonly claimed injuries are identified, as well as the body areas injured most often and the most common causes of these injuries. Finally, a costanalysis of the most commonly claimed injuries is presented. These results will lead to risk-aversion methods that could decrease the frequency and, therefore, the cost of workers' compensation claims for the hospitality industry.
