Abstract
During the 17th year of the Journal, 144 unsolicited manuscripts (original research and essays) were submitted. The proportion from the UK (35%) was lower than in previous years, with 20% from the rest of Europe, 17% from North America, 17% from Asia, and 10% from Australia and New Zealand. At the end of October 2012, 19 (13%) had been accepted for publication, 121 (84%) had been rejected, 3 (2%) have been invited to submit a new version and 1 (1%) was still being reviewed. At the outset we set ourselves a target of informing authors of our initial decision within 12 weeks. Over the 17th year the mean time was 8 weeks. For the 27 papers published in volume 17, the mean length of time between submission and acceptance (including time to revise the manuscript) was 219 days (range 70–357) and between acceptance and publication in hardcopy was 186 days (range 89–275).
