Abstract

During the 29th year of the Journal, a total of 523 unsolicited manuscripts (original research, essays, concepts/methods and review articles) were submitted. This compares with 509 in 2022–23, an increase of 3%. Submissions come from around the world: UK (12%), the rest of Europe (13%), North America (15%), South America (2%), Asia (43%), Africa (9%), and Australia and New Zealand (2%). By October 2024, 9 (2%) had been accepted for publication and 498 (95%) rejected; 12 (2%) were invited to re-submit a revised version. We aim to inform authors within 12 weeks of our initial decision (i.e. whether or not a manuscript will be sent for peer-review), and over the 29th year the mean time was 4 weeks. The mean time from submission to first decision after peer review was 15 weeks. For the 30 papers published in volume 29, the mean length of time between resubmission and acceptance was 173 days (range 94–313). The mean time from acceptance to online publication was 33 days. We will endeavour to maintain these standards which are only possible thanks to the help of the following people who kindly agreed to review papers for us during our 29th year:
