To make a difference therapists need a theory with which to understand the
patient.1 They choose theories that suit them, and need technique to
maintain the therapeutic setting. Psychotherapy developed from healing and medicine,
and from our ethological heritage of care for dependants. It happens in a special
setting which makes new experiences possible. In this article I list a number of
ingredients that are necessary in any effective psychotherapy.
