Abstract

I wanted to write something about Ken to be included here, but have been struggling to find the words. And I realised that there were no words that I could have written to describe this truly amazing person, or the loss I feel now that he has gone. We have lost someone who had a wonderful vision of what the world could be like; through his work and life, which went hand in hand, Ken Plummer showed me, and those who knew him how too he loved life; how can I forget Ken’s passion for music and love of musicals. I remember in particular his adoration of ‘The Wizard of Oz’ and Dorothy’s ruby slippers – the laughter we shared when we were talking about it, or of the many musicals he and Everard had gone to see.
Through his narrative work, his story telling and how he lived his life, he was inspirational. For those of us who had the privilege of knowing him in any capacity, we learned from him. For me, Ken was a sharer; he shared freely his knowledge, wisdom, life, and laughter with all who were willing to accept and learn. He lived his life as an openly Gay academic giving courage to many who were struggling with their own sexuality and fears. Many of his students have gone on to achieve great things in their own work. They drew strength and courage from Ken, which they used to continue the fight against violence, discrimination, bigotry, and hatred, struggling to make life a little easier and safer for some in all parts of the world. Ken’s generosity in sharing his knowledge can be seen around the world in his many past students. He continued to give of himself through all the conferences, lectures, and talks he attended and participated in, even after he retired and had serious health issues. Every aspect of his life showed this immense willingness to give and share of himself. For me, he shined.
I am deeply saddened and bereft by his death. I lost someone I loved, and learned from. The world is not as bright as it was. But I am thankful that I was privileged to have known him and called him my friend.
