Abstract

The J. M. Ko Medal of Advances in Structural Engineering was launched in 2013 in honor of Professor J. M. Ko, the founding Editor-in-Chief of this journal. The Medal is awarded to the most outstanding paper in terms of quality and impact among the papers published three years ago. That is, the 2019 Medal is awarded to a paper selected from the papers published by the journal in 2016 (Volume 19).
The selection procedure started with the initial screening of papers by the local editorial team of the journal, during which the non-self Web of Science citation data of the papers (i.e. excluding all citations by the co-authors of the paper) were consulted. Ten papers were selected and each was then sent to two members of the editorial team (including Editors-in-Chief, Editors and Associate Editors) in the relevant area for assessment. Based on the assessment results, two papers were further shortlisted and submitted to the Members of the International Editorial Board and International Advisory Board for selection.
It gives us great pleasure to announce that the following paper has been selected to receive the 2019 J. M. Ko Medal:
“Fatigue strength application of fracture mechanics to orthotropic steel decks”, Vol. 19, No. 11, pp. 1696–1709, by Wim Nagy, Ken Schotte, Philippe Van Bogaert, and Hans De Backer.
Each author of the winning paper will receive a Medal and they will together share a cash prize of US$ 200.
In addition, the following paper, which was on the final shortlist and received a good portion of the votes cast by the members of the two Boards, has been awarded a Certificate of Commendation:
“Probability-based progressive collapse-resistant assessment for reinforced concrete frame structures”, Vol. 19, No. 11, pp. 1723–1735, by Yi Li, Xinzheng Lu, Hong Guan, Peiqi Ren, and Lanping Qian.
Please join us in congratulating the authors and in thanking the members of the editorial beam and of both the International Editorial Board and the International Advisory Board for all their hard work.
We also take this opportunity to announce that the selection criteria and procedure of the J. M. Ko Medal and its association with the journal are being reviewed, and substantial changes can be expected. Further details will be announced in the journal in the near future.
