Abstract

This issue is dedicated to solving games. The first article announces that for Misère Connect Four, optimal play by both sides leads to a second-player win. This game uses the same rules as the regular Connect Four game, except that the objective is to avoid forming a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal line of four of your own tokens. The authors, Robert Steele and Daniel Larremore, also provide explicit strategies, enabling you to impress your friends with optimal play in the misère form of the game. In the second article, Francesco Righini shows that the two-player game Mijnlieff is won by the second player. The article also proposes rule changes to make the game more balanced.
