Abstract

Greg Dimitriadis died at the age of 45 on December 29th 2014. We are publishing this tribute to mark the anniversary of his death, and pay tribute to his work for QR and for qualitative research.
Greg was primarily a scholar of urban education and youth studies, and was well known for his work on hip-hop. He is probably best known to readers of QR from his chapter(s) on focus groups in successive editions of the Denzin and Lincoln Handbooks (see, for example, Kamberelis and Dimitriadis, 2005). The main service to QR Greg performed, apart from refereeing a lot of papers, was to serve as one of the two American Associate editors from 2008–2014. Being a regional associate editor can be a purely honorary title, but Greg worked hard for the journal. There was a session at the AERA Conference in Chicago in April 2015 which explored the breadth and depth of his scholarship, and his commitment to advancing research. One of his best qualities was his intellectual curiosity, which led him to read widely and, refreshingly, to pay attention to ideas from outwith the USA. For UK editors of an international journal his support was invaluable.
We will miss him, and QR is poorer without him.
