In the above-referenced article, the following information has been corrected:
Page 3, 4th para, the correct paragraph reads as In England and Wales, while ‘the reduction of crime (including its reduction by deterrence)’is an express purpose of sentencing for adults by virtue of section 57 (2) (b) of the Sentencing Act (2020), that provision does not apply to children. The only statutory purposes for sentencing children are confirmed in the section 58 of the Sentencing Act 2020 as the welfare principle (section 44 of the Children and Young Person’s Act, 1933) and the requirement to prevent offending (section 37 of the Crime and Disorder Act, 1998).
Page 4, 3rd paragraph, the last sentence has been added and reads as In December 2020, the Sentencing Council updated its guideline and removed all references to deterrence as a principle applicable to sentencing children (Sentencing Council, 2020).
