Abstract

Editorial Committee member Dr. Patrice Madura Ward-Steinman passed away on June 4, 2020, in Bloomington, Indiana, following a brief illness. Our thoughts and prayers are extended to her family, colleagues, and former students. Patrice was a Professor of Music Education at the Jacobs School of Music, Indiana University, since 2003 and prior to that she had served on the faculties of the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music, Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, and Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne. She was active in several roles as a historian of music education—researcher, author, teacher, reviewer, and mentor. She authored several historical studies, including a book-length study based on her family’s dance band—Madura’s Danceland (Arcadia, 2010). Other book publications included collaborations with renowned historian of American music education, Michael Mark—Contemporary Music Education (4th ed., Cengage, 2014) and Music Education in Your Hands (Routledge, 2010). She wrote a personal tribute after Michael Mark’s passing that was published in the October 2018 issue of the JHRME. She was co-author of a historical project on the Music Education Group of the Big Ten/CIC universities, published in the Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education in spring, 2020. Patrice taught a graduate seminar in historical research methods at Indiana University, and encouraged students to submit their studies for publication. We look forward to reading articles authored by students she mentored and recently accepted for publication in JHRME. Patrice’s careful and diligent review of manuscripts for JHRME reflected her high scholarly and ethical standards. We take this moment to acknowledge her generous service to JHRME and to pay tribute to the many ways she contributed to music education history.
