The Implementation of a Campus Multi-Tiered Systems of Support Approach in South Texas: A Principal Candidate’s Experience

This case study explores a South Texas principal candidate’s perspective on the implementation of a Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS). MTSS is a critical component of a school district and campus as it is a multi-tiered framework designed to support students’ academic and behavioral needs. In this case study, the authors examine the responsibilities of a principal as they collaborate with administrators, educators, and educational stakeholders to launch an MTSS process at a campus by building teacher knowledge and buy-in. This case study is grounded on a distributed framework and turnaround leadership based on the responsibility for MTSS implementation which is shared across different roles within the school, including teachers, counselors, and support staff. This approach emphasizes shared decision-making, collaboration, and leveraging each team member’s expertise. With MTSS, distributed leadership allows for the development of cross-functional teams to address various tiers of support, fostering a sense of ownership and accountability among staff members.
