Transformational leadership and teacher burnout in Türkiye: The moderated mediation role of organisational support,teacher resilience and teacher workload
This study explored the complex relationships among principal transformational leadership, teacher resilience and teacher burnout, highlighting the mediating role of organisational support and the moderating role of teacher workload rooted in the Job Demands-Resources framework. It used structural equation modelling path analysis to investigate these relationships, conducted with a sample of 443 teachers from various school levels in Türkiye. The findings showed that transformational leadership enhanced both teachers perceived organisational support and resilience, which in turn reduced teacher burnout. The relationship between transformational leadership and teacher burnout was primarily indirect, operating through these mediators individually and sequentially. Additionally, the interaction between teacher workload and transformational leadership demonstrated a statistically significant effect on teacher burnout and resilience. In contexts of high workload, transformational leadership functioned as a buffering resource, enhancing teachers’ resilience and reducing burnout levels. We concluded that transformational leadership showed significant potential as a valuable job resource for supporting teacher well-being and reducing burnout by providing increased organisational support and strengthening resilience, particularly among teachers experiencing excessive workload.
