Abstract

Many of us have students who, for whatever reason, fail to study for quizzes and tests in a way that produces the grade they, or we as their teachers, had hoped for. I have had many such students myself, and I have often been at a loss as to what to tell them so that they could increase the effectiveness of their studying. Henry L. Roediger, III, has been conducting research for a number of years on effective study techniques, culminating in his 2014 book Make It Stick: The Science of Successful Learning, coauthored with Peter C. Brown and Mark A. McDaniel. So that instructors would be able to give students who wanted to improve something that is short, easy to read, and to the point, I invited Dr. Roediger to write an essay that instructors could hand to their students to help them to improve their test performance. The following peer-reviewed article is the outcome of that invitation. I hope it will be useful to you in helping your students to maximize their performance on the assessments you give them.
