Abstract
Prone positioning of patients may optimise exposure for certain surgical procedures. There have been many published works that discuss the advantages of prone ventilation and how to nurse a patient who is lying in the prone position. However, there are very few empirical studies that describe how to place a patient in the prone position. This article outlines the problems and describes a safe and efficient manoeuvre that minimises the risks, following moving and handling principles (DoH 1992).
