Abstract
This pilot study was undertaken to determine whether it was possible to check patients' pupils while sitting restrained at the head-end of an ambulance trolley during a transfer. Using a standard pen torch, twenty-six participants were invited to check the pupils of a manikin strapped to a trolley, by sitting at the head-end of the trolley, without removing their seat belt. Participants and two trained observers were asked separately to assess the difficulty of seeing the pupils, using a three-point scale, the view graded as: impossible, seen with difficulty, easy. Thirteen participants found the task impossible to perform, compared to six who found it easy. Height and gender had minimal influence on the ability to check pupils. Half of the participants could not perform the task. A review of current transfer guidelines and a change of the design of the ambulance or the restraint system to promote staff and patient safety are suggested.
