Women who have developed gestational diabetes have significant risk of developing gestational diabetes in future pregnancies. They should be given lifestyle advice and encouragement to normalise their body mass index if overweight. A fasting glucose test should be offered at 6–13 weeks post-natal to exclude diabetes. If this is below 6 mmol/l they will need an annual HbA1c test and they should be told they are at moderate risk of developing type 2 diabetes in the future
