Abstract

Answer C. Urgent referral to children’s social services
In the UK female genital mutilation (FGM) is illegal. The Female Genital Mutilation Act 2003 replaced the Prohibition Of Female Circumcision Act 1985 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. If you suspect a child is at high risk of FGM, or had undergone FGM, you must contact the children’s social services immediately and keep the child in a safe place while you are arranging this. All professionals dealing with children should have knowledge and training on how to do this. Although reporting the family to the police might be an option, with no eminent danger to the girl and the presence of referral to social services option, this might not be the MOST appropriate option.
