Referral criteria for severe acne include:
Severe variant of acne, e.g. acne fulminans or gram negative folliculitis Severe nodulocystic acne At risk of developing scarring despite treatment in primary care Moderate acne where there has not been a response to treatment to at least two courses of antibiotics lasting greater than 3 months An underlying problem is suspected or diagnostic uncertainty Severe sociological or psychological problems such as reduced progress at school
