In gonadotrophin-dependent precocious puberty, activation of the hypothalamus-pituitary axis triggers early development. Gonadotrophin releasing hormone agonists are used to switch off this axis, such as goserelin. Desmopressin is used occasionally to treat enuresis. Ethinylestradiol is given for delayed puberty in girls as well as progesterone. The combined contraceptive pill should not be given to induce puberty as it may impair breast tissue development. Octreotide is an inhibitor of growth hormone and can be used as a treatment modality for pituitary tumours.
