A stepwise approach to the initial management of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) in formula-fed babies includes:
Review of the feeding history and calculation of the feed volume. For babies aged 1–3 months calculate the feed volume from body weight as 150 ml/kg/day.
If the feed volume is excessive, reduce accordingly Offer trial of thickeners (anti-reflux formula) If thickeners are ineffective stop and offer trial of alginates
