Fifteen-year-old Amber consults you with her mum. Mum has discovered that Amber is self-harming. Amber explains that after an argument with her boyfriend she took a razor blade and made some superficial wounds to her left forearm. She describes wanting to ‘vent her frustration’. Her mood is good with no symptoms of depression. She has been eating and sleeping normally and is doing well at school. She now feels ‘stupid’ for self-harming and denies any further intention to self-harm. On examination, she has two superficial cuts to the anterior aspect of her wrist that do not require any further management. There is no evidence of previous self-harm or low mood.
